Report: Patriots prefer J.J. McCarthy at #3 in latest draft buzz.

According to multiple reports from sources close to the Patriots, Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy could be the Patriots pick at #3 in 2024 NFL Draft set to take place April 25-27 in Detroit.

McCarthy was not considered a top five draft pick by most analyst before the NFL Combine back in March. But McCarthy has begun to move steadily upward on many teams draft boards that are looking at drafting a quarterback.

NBC Sports Boston’s Michael Holley recently stated on an episode of Boston Sports Tonight that they hype around McCarthy shooting up many draft boards is real. “There’s a really good chance he could wind up on the New England Patriots,” said Holley.

“I’m hearing more and more chatter that J.J. McCarthy is high, if not first, on the boards of the Washington Commanders and the New England Patriots. He may be QB1 for both of those teams,” Holley added.

McCarthy won a National Championship at Michigan this past season. In his collegian career as a starter for the Wolverines McCarthy went 27-1, throwing for 5,680 yards, 44 touchdowns and just nine interceptions.

Only one former Michigan quarterback has ever been selected in the first round of the draft and that was Jim Harbaugh who was taken number 26 overall back in 1987 by the Chicago Bears.

It’s likely that McCarthy will break that mark. At the very least, he could become just the second quarterback in Michigan school history to be drafted in the first round.

McCarthy is scheduled to meet with the Patriots next week.
