Caleb Williams becomes the fourteenth heisman trophy winning QB to go number one in NFL common draft era

By | Published | No Comments

A lot of pressure is often placed upon the shoulders of Hiesman trophy winning quarterbacks that get drafted into the NFL. Even more pressure is placed on their shoulders when the go number one overall.

Caleb Williams is the latest former Hiesman Trophy winning quarterback to be selected number one by the Chicago Bears, joining the recent likes of Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield.

Not surprisingly those aforementioned quarterbacks went to teams that were desperate for a quarterback to turn their fortunes around. The Bears are certainly hoping that Williams will be their long lost answer at the quarterback position.

Williams was a star at USC, winning the Hiesman trophy in 2022 with one of the best seasons a college quarterback has ever had. Williams threw for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also rushed for another ten touchdowns.

The Bears haven’t had anything close to a franchise quarterback since Jay Cutler was their starting quarterback from 2009 to 2016.

The Bears traded away Justin Fields during the off-season to the Steelers. Fields was the last Bears quarterback miss, drafted ninth overall in 2021 NFL Draft. The Bears hope that pieces such as Rome Odunze, the highly drafted wide receiver out of Washington – selected ninth overall in this year’s draft, will be a major contribution in making sure that the Bears don’t squander another highly drafted quarterback prospect.
