Buffalo Bills fire OC Ken Dorsey after bad loss to the Denver Broncos

By | Published | 1 Comment

The Buffalo Bills have made one big change that they hope will spark much needed offensive improvement. They have fired offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey. Dorsey was hired at the beginning of the 2022 season, after previous OC Brian Daboll left to take the head coaching position with the New York Giants. That hiring has not paid off in the ways that the Bills had hoped.

The Bills find themselves at a rather surprising record of 5-5 at the end of week 10. Even more surprisingly the Bills find themselves outside the current playoff picture in the AFC. The Bills sit currently in second place in the AFC East, but are a full two games behind the Miami Dolphins in the loss column. The Dolphins were on their bye in week 10, but will play the Raiders at home the Sunday. The Bills will face the New York Jets on a short week this Sunday. But that game might not be the cake walk it has been in years past; as the Bills already dropped their first meeting of the season to the Jets back in week one.

Even if the Bills do manage to beat the Jets, their next two opponents are the Chiefs and the Eagles on the road. Then after their late bye week, (in week 13), they face the Cowboys at home. That is a brutal three game stretch that will likely determine if the Bills will be able to make a playoff run or fade away down the final stretch of the season.

The decision to fire Dorsey is largely pragmatic and more so to protect Bills QB Josh Allen; rather than a complete indictment on Dorsey. While the Bills 262 points so far this season are down from last year – at the same point in time, the Bills are still eight in points scored and the teams 253 yards through the air is seventh best. Their run game has been a bit lackluster this season, but it still ranks above league average at just over 113 yards per game.

Allen, for his part, leads the league in turnovers this season, including a league leading eleven interceptions. His relationship with his star wide receiver Stefon Diggs has also been put under the microscope this season, as the two have had some public disagreements on how best to hook up in the passing game. Following Monday nights loss to the Denver Broncos, Diggs brother Trevon posted a twitter message that seemed to indicate that he felt it was time his brother took his services somewhere else.

Dorsey’s firing is likely a move to designed to get Allen and Diggs better oriented like they have been the last tow seasons. The Bills will use quarterback coach Joe Brady to fill in as their new OC on an interim basis for the rest of the season.

[…] The Bills fired their offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, earlier in the day on Tuesday. That move is certainly a curious one to say the least. While play calling always seems to surface to the top of the frantic boil when teams to start lose winnable games, Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s turnovers are also a big reason that the Bills are sitting at 5-5.
