Cowboys decline fifth year option on backup quarterback Trey Lance

By | Published | No Comments

Trey Lance in his three years so far in the NFL has played in just eight games, six in his rookie season and just two in 2022. Lance was inactive for all games last season with the Dallas Cowboys. Therefor it was with little surprise that the Cowboys declined to pick up Lance’s rookie option.

Lance was selected third overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 draft. Lance played sparingly in the teams first four games during his rookie season, but after Niners starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was injured during the team’s week four game against Seattle, Lance was named the starter for their week five game against Arizona.

However, Lance injured his right knee in that game and did not play again until week eleven. Lance saw his sophomore season cut short after just two games to start the season, when he suffered an ankle injury in week two against the Seahawks.

Lance was traded to the Cowboys in August of 2023, but did not appear in a single game last season for Dallas.

With the Cowboys declining of Lance’s fifth year option, and starting quarterback Dak Prescott not signed beyond this upcoming season, the Cowboys do not have a starting quarterback signed through the 2024 season. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush is also unsigned through the 2024 season.

That means that Lance, Prescott, and Rush could become unrestricted free agents after this season. The Cowboys have indicated in previous talks that their goal is to have Prescott signed to a long term deal, however according to Prescott no talks of a long term extension have started.
