In an unsurprising move, the Jacksonville Jaguars have declined to pick up the fifth year option on Mac Jones. Jones was acquired in a trade during the offseason from the New England Patriots.
Jones would have stood to make $25.2 million in guaranteed money had the Jaguars exercised his rookie option. But Jones has not played well since a promising rookie season in 2021.
Jones went 2-9 in games he started last season, and was eventually benched in favor of backup quarterback Bailey Zappe last year.
The Jaguars are hoping that a fresh start, in the city where Jones grew up, will help get Jones going in the right direction again.
