The Cincinnati Bengals will have a new playing surface in 2024. The Bengals announced that they plan to replace their current artificial playing surface, which uses a slit-film turf with a new artificial playing surface known as FieldTurf Core system.
The Bengals were one of just three teams entering the 2023 season still using the slit film turf. The Vikings and the Colts announced that they would replace their playing surface at the start of the 2024 season as well.
Slit Film turf became popular because of its flexibility to remove the turf in small sections. It was also somewhat more economical to replace certain areas of the turf that had excessive wear as well.
However, data compiled by the NFL and the NFL Players Association suggests that a higher occurrence of lower extremity, non-contact injuries can be linked to artificial or synthetic playing surfaces. The NFLPA has argued that the league should mandate that all stadiums use natural grass, as that is believed to cause the fewest such non-contact injuries and according to several studies is favored by the majority of players.
Hamilton County commissioners, who oversee maintenance of Paycor Stadium where the Bengals play, approved the plan as part of a series of renovations to the stadium.
