Will Levis throws 4 touchdowns in his first career start

By | Published | No Comments

There were some questions coming into this week as to which quarterback would start in place of the injured Ryan Tannehill. The Tennessee Titans had the experienced second year quarterback Malik Willis ready to go or they could take a chance on the rookie Will Levis – a second round pick out of Kentucky.

The Titans chose to start Will Levis. It’s safe to say that they chose wisely. Levis had himself quite the day, a historic day, as he did something that only two other quarterbacks in NFL history have ever done – throw 4 TD’s in their first career start. Levis didn’t get cheap touchdowns either. No check downs or bubble screens to his running backs. Nope! Levis went deep. His first touchdown of the game was a 47-yard bomb to Deandre Hopkins, which seemed to catch the Falcons defense off guard.

In fact, the Falcons defense seemed to not think much of Levis arm and his ability to hit big time throws down the field and that would come back to haunt the Falcons. Levis second touchdown of the game was not quite as deep as his first. Just your average 16-yard surgical strike over the middle of the field – on a crossing route to, you guessed it, Deandre Hopkins.

After two FG’s in the third quarter cut the Titans lead to 14-9, Levis’ big arm struck again with an even longer bomb – 61-yard shot to Hopkins. It was a hat trick for both Levis and Hopkins. But Levis wasn’t finished yet. The Falcons once again trimmed the Titans lead to 21-16, as Falcons backup QB Taylor Heinicke made a nice deep throw of his own – a 52 yard strike to Kevin Hodge. A few plays later, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson would find the end zone for his first touchdown of the game.

After both teams traded punts on successive drives, it was Will Levis turn to try and put the game away. Levis showed he could put together a nice long, methodical, and time consuming drive – starting from his own 15 yard line. Showing the poise of a quarterback with many more years experience, Levis took just what the Falcons defense was giving him. Smart passes to the flat, including a key 3rd and 4 completion to his TE Chigoziem Okonkwo to keep the drive going.

Then on a 2nd and 11, at the Falcons 33-yard line, Levis would use his big arm one final time to find Nick Westbrook-Ikhine in the back corner of the end zone for a beautiful 33 yard bomb.

Levis would finish his amazing afternoon 19/29, 238 yards, 4TD’s and most importantly no interceptions. Levis celebrated with his family following his emotional first career win and he certainly deserved to do just that.
