Has Bill Belichick coached his last game

By | Published | 1 Comment

When the New England Patriots “mutually” parted ways with Bill Belichick earlier this month, it was widely assumed that the legendary, future Hall of Fame coach would quickly be snatched up by one of the handful of teams that had a current head coaching vacancy.

That has not been the case.

The Atlanta Falcons, who are believed to be the only team to have interviewed Belichick, twice in fact, passed on his available services this past week, when team owner Arthur Blank announced that Raheem Morris would become the teams next head coach.

The Panthers, Titans, Chargers and Raiders have all filled their openings, which now leaves just the Seahawks and Commanders as teams still in the market.

The Commanders appear to be linked to Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and have already conducted virtual interviews. The Commanders appear to just be waiting till either Lions are eliminated from the playoffs or the Lions win the Super Bowl to make their final pitch to Johnson.

That leaves just Seattle. Could the Seahawks now become a suitor for Belichick’s services. The Seahawks have shown the strongest interest in Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. They have already had two in-person interviews with Quinn so far in their head coaching search.

Quinn has ties to the Seahawks, as he was their defensive coordinator during their Super Bowl run. Quinn also has head coaching experience with the Atlanta Falcons, and coached them to the 2016 Super Bowl, before 28-3 happened.

If Belichick isn’t on the Commanders or Seahawks radar, and by all accounts he isn’t, it is becoming more likely that Belichick may have to wait till next year to have another crack at coaching.

It seems hard to imagine that he would not get at least one more crack at it. Belichick sits just fifteen wins shy of breaking Don Shula’s all-time head coaching wins. While that is not the sole reason that another team would take a chance on the 72-year old coach, it would be the feather in any organizations cap to be associated with that moment.

Belichick’s record as a head coach without future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady seems to be, along with his age, the biggest pump the breaks reason that no team has snatched him up just yet.

Still though, at some point some team is likely to look past all that, because the name Belichick is coaching lore in the NFL. The question now becomes, is Belichick willing to play the waiting game.

I believe that Bill Belichick will not get another job until next season. I see him working with fox, cbs or some other network
