By default you are assigned to a group when you register.  This is the default group known as the Junkies group.  If you chose to leave that group, you will be assigned to a default group status.  This means that you will lose certain privileges, such as creating blog posts, accessing exclusive group content and requesting to become friends with other members.

To hide your profile, simply go into the settings under your profile tab and click on privacy.
